Carmelite Basilica

Keszthely

The Carmelite Basilica of Keszthely, commonly known as the Church of St Teresa the Little, is a stunning architectural masterpiece, a modern-era Roman Catholic church dedicated to the heroes of the fallen in the Great War. The construction of the church was difficult and complicated, as it was completed in the midst of a turbulent period in Hungarian history, during the Great Depression that followed the loss of the Great War and the Trianon peace treaty. The church is 53 metres long and 18 metres wide, with three bells in its 38-metre-high tower. The church has beautiful altars made of marble from Siena, Thassos and Ruskica. In 1989, Pope John Paul II elevated the church to the rank of Basilica Minor.
