Tátika Castle

Zalaszántó

Among the varied sights of the northern part of the Keszthely Hills stands out the medieval castle ruins on the conical, volcanic basalt peak, 413 metres high. Tátika castle, which is probably one of the first private castles in Hungary, was built by the Tátika clan in the 13th century, before the Tatar invasion, but it is not identical to the present ruins. After the Tatar invasion, Béla IV confiscated the castle from the family and donated it to the Bishop of Veszprém, who built a new castle on the hill of the Várhegy.
